Obsidian is not a mineral but a glass — lava cooled too fast to crystallise. The pale flecks in this piece are cristobalite, formed as the flow finally began to settle.
It is the darkest reference we make: at arm's length it reads as pure black, and only close up does the snowflake pattern appear.
